Compensation Releases From Winterburn Reservoir

Details of the application
Water Resources Act 1991
Notice of Extended Period of Trial Compensation Releases From Winterburn Reservoir, Skipton, North Yorkshire.
The Canal & River Trust (previously British Waterways) in collaboration with the Environment Agency, are proposing to extend the duration of an existing trial until March 2022.
The on-going purpose of the trial is to confirm that the reduced compensation release from Winterburn Reservoir is able to sustain the ecology of the Winterburn and Eshton Becks. This allows water resources to be used more effectively to sustain the water supply to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
The water discharged from Winterburn Reservoir into Winterburn Beck has been reduced from 9,350 cubic metres per day to 5,300 cubic metres per day. The trial may also test the effect of a higher discharge during late autumn and early winter, and short flushing flow in autumn.
During the period of the trial the compensation flow over Eshton weir will remain at 3,410 cubic metres per day.
The water will be released between 1 January and 30 September inclusive.
