Your organisation’s commitments to achieve the rights of people with disabilities in developing countries

The Global Concerns Trust work with MACOHA (Malawi Council for the Handicapped) and KODO (Kuthandiza Osayenda Disability Outreach) to decrease stigma attached to disability in rural Malawi by providing training, tools and support to adults with disabilities and supporting them to start successful and sustainable businesses. This results in a change in perception within rural communities towards people with disabilities and demonstrates their potential to be successful business leaders who contribute economically and socially. .

Timeframe and/or implementation plan (75 words limit)

By October 2018 we will have supported 355 adults with disabilities living in rural areas of Malawi to start sustainable businesses and become financially independent, 50% of whom will be women. We will work to source funding to continue and expand our disability specific projects in Malawi, to include the provision of disability mainstreaming training to a wide range of international development organisations working in country.

The Global Concerns Trust has worked with MACOHA (Malawi Council for the Handicapped) and KODO (Kuthandiza Osayenda Disability Outreach) since 2007, to offer comprehensive vocational training to adults with disabilities living in rural areas in Malawi. Our beneficiaries receive the tools and training needed to start sustainable businesses and the post training support to help them expand their enterprises. We will seek funding to expand our disability specific projects in Malawi to further rural districts.

The Global Concerns Trust disaggregate data from our Malawian projects by gender, age and type of disability. We commit to continue to develop our data collection methods and to use the Washington Group questions within all our development projects in Malawi.

We will use the Washington Group Questions when collecting data from project participants in Malawi as of July 2018.

50% of our project beneficiaries in Malawi are women with disabilities and we will maintain this level of inclusion of women in future disability specific projects.
