Charity Commission responds to Select Committee questions

Published 13 May 2020

The Charity Commission has responded to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Select Committee’s questions on ‘the work of the Charity Commission.’

On 14 April, the Charity Commission responded to a number of questions from the DCMS Select Committee. These questions were submitted in writing instead of a planned evidence session, which was cancelled as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter to the DCMS Select Committee, Charity Commission Chair Baroness Stowell outlined how the COVID-19 crisis has presented a significantly changed context for the country, and for the Commission.

The responses sent to the Select Committee explain in detail how the Commission continues to pursue a clear purpose of ensuring it maximises the benefit of charity to society and that it upholds its good name in the public interest. This clear purpose, and the 2018-2023 strategy that underpins it, are all the more important in a period when the charity sector is needed like never before.

The Commission’s responses to the Select Committee also demonstrates that, whilst volumes have continued to grow, the Commission has been successful in reducing backlogs, improving systems and introducing changes to ensure continuous improvement.
