Cemex UK Materials Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to abstract water from underground strata consisting of the Holme Pierrepont Sand and Gravel Member, which overlies solid geology of the Grunthorpe Member of the Mercia Mudstone Group, at land off the A513 near Orgreave, Alrewas, Staffordshire, from the two areas marked by National Grid References SK 14526 15131; SK 14804 15150; SK 14759 14911; SK 14475 14871 and SK 15100 15223; SK 15320 15197; SK 15283 14982; SK 15048 14950, to transfer it to the Pyford Brook at National Grid Reference SK 15301 14953 without intervening use.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 521 cubic metres an hour
  • 12,500 cubic metres a day
  • 6,300,000 cubic metres a year
  • between January and December inclusive in each year.

The purpose of the transfer is dewatering to facilitate sand and gravel extraction. All water removed from the proposed abstraction area will be discharged into the Pyford Brook via a consented discharge point.
