The Canal & River Trust has applied to the Environment Agency for 3 licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the River Calder at Greenwood Weir, Mirfield at National Grid Reference SE 21694 19880.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 28,800 cubic metres an hour
  • 691,200 cubic metres a day
  • 200,000,000 cubic metres a year

The water will be used for hydro-electric power generation.

The Canal & River Trust has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Calder at Greenwood Weir at National Grid Reference SE 21741 19856.

By raising Greenwood Weir by 0.1 metre, water will be impounded to maintain navigation levels and provide a consistent water level for abstraction and amenity flow calculations.

The quantities specified above are proposed to be taken only if available after environmental flows including fish and eel passage are accounted for and all abstracted water will be returned to the river near the foot of the weir. A transfer licence has also been applied for at the site for fish pass and by-wash flows.
