Details of the application

Canal and River Trust have applied to the Environment Agency to vary a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006).

The application is to vary licence serial number NW/068/0003/0311 which authorises the abstraction of water from the River Weaver at Dutton sluices, Northwich, Cheshire at National Grid Reference SJ 58755 77050.

The current licence authorises abstraction for the purpose of hydro-electric power production via a planned Archimedes screw turbine, for the following quantities:

  • 43,200 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,036,800 cubic metres a day
  • 378,432,000 cubic metres a year
  • 12,000 litres per second
  • All year abstraction

Conditions on the licence ensure a flow of 2,400 litres per second will continue to pass through the existing sluices when abstraction is taking place. The applicant has applied via this variation to remove the condition, thereby allowing the minimum flow previously required to pass through the existing sluices, to now pass via the hydro-turbine.
