Details of the application

Canal and River Trust (CRT) has applied to the Environment Agency for 7 licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

Stoke weir

The first application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the River Trent at National Grid Reference (NGR) SK 64996 40670 for the purpose of hydro-electric power generation (HEP). Water will be immediately returned to the river downstream of the weir.

The application is to abstract water all year as follows:

  • 72,000 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,728,000 cubic metres a day
  • 620,000,000 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 20,000 litres per second.

A fish pass and eel and lamprey pass will also be installed alongside the two Archimedean screw turbines to aid upstream passage.

CRT has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Trent between NGRs SK 64985 40630 and SK 65069 40524 by installing inflatable bladder weirs on the existing concrete weir to help regulate the upstream water level.

Gunthorpe weir

The second application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the River Trent at NGR SK 68866 43677 for the purpose of HEP generation. Water will be immediately returned to the river downstream of the weir.

The application is to abstract water all year as follows:

  • 72,000 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,728,000 cubic metres a day
  • 620,000,000 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 20,000 litres per second.

A fish pass and eel and lamprey pass will also be installed alongside the two Archimedean screw turbines to aid upstream passage.

CRT has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Trent between NGRs SK 68754 43717 and SK 68856 43673 by installing inflatable bladder weirs on the existing concrete weir to help regulate the upstream water level.

Hazelford weirs

The third application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the River Trent at NGR SK 73249 49506 for the purpose of HEP generation. Water will be immediately returned to the river downstream of the weir.

The application is to abstract water all year as follows:

  • 198,000 cubic metres an hour
  • 4,752,000 cubic metres a day
  • 1,390,000,000 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 55,000 litres per second.

A fish pass will also be installed alongside the Kaplan turbine to aid upstream passage.

CRT has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Trent between NGRs SK 73229 49494 and SK 73310 49460 (north channel) and NGRs SK 73168 49316 and SK 73194 49266 (south channel) by installing inflatable bladder weirs on the existing concrete weirs to help regulate the upstream water level.

CRT has also applied to the Environment Agency for a transfer licence to abstract (take) from the River Trent at NGR SK 73155 49310 for fish passage on the south channel. Water will be immediately returned to the river downstream of the weir.

An eel and lamprey pass will also be installed on the south channel.
