Details of the application

The Canal and River Trust (CRT) has applied to the Environment Agency for three licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from the River Trent at Cromwell Weir at National Grid Reference (NGR) SK 80936 60978.

This application is to abstract water all year at the following rates:

  • 288,000 cubic metres an hour
  • 6,912,000 cubic metres a day
  • 2,522,880,000 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 80,000 litres per second.

The water will be used to generate hydro-electric power (HEP) before returning to the River Trent immediately downstream of the weir. A Larinier fish pass will also be installed alongside the HEP turbines to aid upstream passage of migratory and course fish.

The second application is for a transfer licence to abstract water from the River Trent all year at Cromwell Weir at NGR SK 80908 60935 and transfer it to a new channel before returning to the River Trent immediately downstream of the weir. The new channel will aid eel and lamprey migration upstream of the weir and hydropower scheme. The instantaneous abstraction rate will not exceed 880 litres per second.

The third application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of water at Cromwell Weir between NGRs SK 80877 61154 and SK 80975 61123 by installing inflatable bladder weirs on the existing concrete weir crest. The upstream water level will be raised by up to 800 millimetres to compensate for turbine draw-down and to improve fish passage.
