Budgeting Loans: how to ask the Independent Case Examiner for a further review

Updated 13 November 2015

If you’re unhappy with a Budgeting Loan decision, you can ask Jobcentre Plus to review it.

If you still think the decision is wrong after the Jobcentre Plus review, you can ask the office of the Independent Case Examiner for a further review. You need to do this within 28 days of the date of the Jobcentre Plus review.

How to ask for a further review

To ask the office of the Independent Case Examiner for a further review you need to put your request in writing. We can’t accept requests for review by phone.

Write to us with the following information:

  • your full name
  • your National Insurance number
  • your address and phone number
  • details of the item or items you applied for
  • the date of the decision made by Jobcentre Plus
  • the reasons why you disagree with the decision made by Jobcentre Plus
  • anything else you think we should know

If you want a representative to act on your behalf, please tell us their name, address and phone number. If you give us details of a representative, we’ll assume that you’ve given them permission to act on your behalf, unless you state otherwise.

Where to send your request

Send your request to:

The Independent Case Examiner
PO Box 209
Bootle
L20 7WA

Or fax your request to 0151 221 6601

What happens next

When we get your request for a review, we’ll ask Jobcentre Plus for details of your Budgeting Loan application. We may contact you or your representative if we need more information.

When our Further Reviewing Officer has enough information, they’ll make their own decision about your application. If the Jobcentre Plus decision was wrong, they will change it. They’ll write to you and Jobcentre Plus to explain their decision. It should take no more than 15 working days to make a decision, from the date we get your request.

If the Further Reviewing Officer decides to award a Budgeting Loan or to change the amount originally offered, Jobcentre Plus will send you an award letter and an agreement for you to sign. The agreement will explain the award and the repayment arrangements. Jobcentre Plus can’t issue a payment until you return the signed agreement to them.

If you have any questions about when you’ll get your award letter or payment from Jobcentre Plus, please contact them using the details included in the Further Reviewing Officer’s decision letter.
