Details of the application

The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Greencore Prepared Meals Limited.

Application number

EPR/DP3824LY/A001

Regulated facility type

Application is for a New Bespoke installation permit for an existing food and drink facility which produces chilled soups, sauces, stocks and gravies for own brand supermarket customers. This permit application is due to increased production on site, following consolidation of product from another Greencore site. The site operates from Units 3 and 4 Bristol Distribution Park with an additional raw material storage facility in Unit 6A.

The permitted activities include the following in addition to the directly associated activities:

Section 6.8 A(1)(d)(iii)(aa) Treatment and processing of animal and vegetable raw materials (other than milk only), both in combined and separate products.

Section 5.4 A(1)(a)(ii) Disposal of non-hazardous waste with a capacity exceeding 50 tonnes per day via physico-chemical treatment.

Steam cooking and hot water are provided by two boilers, with an aggregated thermal input of 9.0MW. Except for maintenance periods and or very low production windows both boilers are required to meet steam demand. Three additional boilers operate for approximately 6 months of the year to provide space heating for the office and changing room areas. These boilers have a combined input of circa 0.28MW. The emissions from the boilers are released to air from combustion exhaust gases. Cooking steam is also extracted from the cooking process and vented to atmosphere.

An odour management plan has been produced to control any potential odours from this point source and any diffuse sources.

Cleaning in Place (CIP) programmes generate the majority of the site’s process wastewater. All effluent generated through production, cleaning and hygiene processes is collected and pumped to a newly constructed effluent treatment plant. This process water is treated through solids removal screening, a balance tank with aeration, pH correction and dissolved air flotation with sludge removal. Cleaned effluent is then transferred to an intermediate Wessex Water treatment plant and is subject to a Trade Effluent Consent.
