Breedon Southern Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application includes a licence to transfer water from underground strata consisting of sands and gravels at Earls Barton Spinney Quarry, from the quarry area which is marked by National Grid References (NGRs) SP 82857 62588, SP 85214 62447, SP 85637 61641, and SP 82947 62306 to transfer it without intervening use to: either the River Nene at SP 85089 61982 or into a chain of 3 lagoons located within the quarry area, at NGRs SP 84853 62387, SP 84992 62329, and SP 84889 62312.

. The application is to abstract water as follows:

For transfer to the River Nene:

  • 79.2 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,900.8 cubic metres a day
  • 693,792 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 January and 31 December inclusive in each year

The transfer to the River Nene is for the purpose of dewatering.

For transfer to the lagoons:

  • 380 cubic metres an hour
  • 9,120 cubic metres a day
  • 91,200 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 January and 31 December inclusive in each year.

The transfer to the lagoons is for the purpose of providing make-up or top-up water for subsequent abstraction for mineral washing.

Only one route of transfer will occur at any time. Water transferred to the River Nene will be discharged at NGR SP 85089 61982 under discharge permit EPR/GB3449EJ. The lagoons at SP 84853 62387, and SP 84992 62329 are silt settlement lagoons. The lagoon at SP 84889 62312 is a freshwater lagoon.

The application also includes a licence to abstract water from underground strata consisting of sands and gravels at Earls Barton Spinney Quarry, from the quarry area which is marked by NGRs SP 82857 62588, SP 85214 62447, SP 85637 61641, and SP 82947 62306, and from the freshwater lagoon located within the quarry area at SP 84889 62312.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

From the quarry area:

  • 20 cubic metres a day
  • 5,720 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 January and 31 December inclusive in each year

The water will be used for dust suppression.

From the freshwater lagoon:

  • 252 cubic metres an hour
  • 2,772 cubic metres a day
  • 799,344 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 January and 31 December inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for mineral washing.

The freshwater lagoon is fed via an overflow from the two settlement lagoons at NGRs SP 84853 62387 and SP 84992 62329. The three lagoons are lined and connect to a groundwater recharge trench, and are considered as a groundwater source
