Bath & West Community Energy Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to abstract water from the River Avon at The Old Mill Hotel, Batheaston, Bath at National Grid Reference (NGR) ST 77458 67018 before returning it to the River Avon at NGR ST 77441 67013 without intervening use.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 5,400 cubic metres an hour
  • 129,600 cubic metres a day
  • 42,011,944 cubic metres a year
  • at an instantaneous rate of 1,500 litres per second

Between 1 January and 31 December inclusive in each year.

Further details are that the applicant is proposing to install a new waterwheel, in place of the current decorative waterwheel, together with an eel pass for the purpose of hydro-electric power generation.
