This guidance covers all gravimetric filling instruments in use for trade. It is addressed to organisations that are required to comply with weights and measures law.

The Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 came into force on 28 December 2016 under the New Legislative Framework (NLF), a common set of principles developed to improve the European internal market. The regulations focus on making procedures more consistent. They replace the Measuring Instruments (Automatic Gravimetric Filling Instruments) Regulations 2006, but the existing technical requirements are unchanged, so this guidance remains relevant.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued guidance under the NLF in August 2017. Read the specific guidance on the provisions introduced by the NLF for the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016.
