Published 14 January 2016
Applies to England
Details of the proposal
The Environment Agency is proposing to vary (change) licence number 14/50/008/0634 held by Arla Foods Limited to protect the Dartmoor Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
The Environment Agency is required to give notice of this proposal. The Environment Agency give this notice in line with section 52 of the Water Resources Act 1991 (as amended by section 22 of the Water Act 2003) and regulation 31 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
This licence allows the licence holder:
Arla Foods Limited
Arla House
4 Savannah Way
Leeds Valley Park
Leeds
LS10 1AB
to abstract a total of 1,818.44 cubic metres (m³) of water a day, and a total of 663,725 m³ a year, from underground strata at Taw Valley Creamery in North Tawton, all year. This is at National Grid References:
- SS 65445 01259
- SS 65509 01260
The licence holder can abstract water for industrial evaporative and non-evaporative cooling and industrial processing and cleaning.
The proposal is to vary the licence to:
- Reduce daily overall abstraction to 1,500 m³ per day plus a peaking factor of 1800 m³ per day on up to 4 days per month
- Reduce annual overall abstraction to 550,000 m³ per year
- Within the overall reduced licenced quantities, the breakdown of the specific quantities between uses will remain broadly in the same proportions (1% for evaporative cooling, 16% for non-evaporative cooling and 83% for industrial processing and cleaning), as on the current licence
- Include a time limit on the licence so that it expires on 31 March 2030.
The Environment Agency has made this proposal as part of a programme to help restore sustainable abstraction.
