1. VAT21.1 Can visitors take part in archaeological excavations?

Yes, under the following concession:

Applicants seeking entry as visitors may take part in archaeological excavations if they:

  • are doing unpaid work as volunteers; or
  • are paid only subsistence and travelling expenses.

Applicants are required to produce a letter from the director or organiser of the excavation stating:

  • the period of employment and, where appropriate,
  • what arrangements have been made for the applicant’s accommodation and maintenance.

2. VAT21.2 Is entry clearance mandatory?

No, but if issued should be endorsed ‘VISIT’.

3. VAT21.3 How much leave to enter?

Up to 12 months is the maximum length of stay permitted under this concession. Foreign nationals aged 16 or over coming for longer than 6 months should be required where appropriate to register with the police. There is no further extension of stay beyond 12 months.
