Applying for an SIA licence when you have driving offences

Published 11 July 2024

Request

Question 1

If you are issued with a fixed penalty notice after a road traffic stop, does this affect your security vetting?

Question 2

Additionally, do I have to declare this to the SIA despite it not being a caution of reprimand?

Question 3

Are there any reporting obligations for a fixed penalty notice to both the SIA and an employer?

Response

I can confirm that the SIA does hold some of this information.

Questions 1 and 2

There are certain conditions to getting and keeping your SIA licence. These conditions can be viewed on pages 54-56 of our licensing criteria, Get Licensed. You can also read about the SIA licence conditions you must follow on GOV.UK.

One SIA licence condition is that:

  • you must tell us if you receive any conviction or caution, or are charged, for an offence identified as a relevant offence in our licensing criteria

If the offence is not relevant to holding an SIA licence we will not take it into consideration. A list of the offences we consider relevant can be viewed at pages 64-94 of Get Licensed. You may find page 94 the most useful as it contains a list of the driving offences the SIA considers relevant.

We do not consider parking or speeding offences to be relevant to holding an SIA licence. There is therefore no obligation for a licence holder or applicant to inform us of having committed this type of offence.

Question 3

The SIA does not hold this information. This is a question for your employer.
