Details
The Act will improve the speed and efficiency of the criminal justice system’s response to low-level offending by enabling the police to prosecute uncontested minor offences of shop theft. It will extend the scope of the statutory witness protection scheme to cover other vulnerable individuals and ensure that offenders sentenced to custody will contribute to the costs of supporting victims by removing the power of magistrates’ courts to add additional days to a sentence of imprisonment instead of the victims surcharge. The Act will also enable the Lord Chancellor to set certain courts and tribunal fees above cost to ensure that the courts are properly resourced so that access to justice is maintained.
