Details

This page publishes a report from a Food Standards Agency allergenicity workshop, with supporting background information. The workshop was held in response to advice from the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP), highlighting the need to review and update guidance for allergenicity risk assessment in novel foods, including genetically modified foods and products developed through precision breeding. This reflects developments in the science of food allergenicity and recent applications involving novel alternative proteins. The workshop brought together food allergy experts from a range of disciplines to discuss current and future approaches to allergenicity risk assessment. Discussions focused on three main topic areas: allergen bioinformatics, in vitro approaches, and exposure and thresholds. The report summarises the discussions and recommendations from the workshop and, drawing on these and other sources, including international guidance and peer reviewed literature, presents a draft workflow to support the revision of allergenicity risk assessment guidance for novel foods.
