Agrivert composting facility, Ardley, Oxfordshire

Published 28 February 2013

Agrivert is an in-vessel composting facility. The Agrivert plant processes organic waste into compost and has a 20-year contract with Oxfordshire County Council. The Environment Agency has received many complaints from local residents about smells from the site.

The Environment Agency’s role is to make sure the Agrivert site is operated in a way that does not cause harm to the environment or to human health. They make sure that the site keeps to the conditions in its environmental permit, which include managing the odours being released on the site.

Latest update

The Environment Agency has partially approved Agrivert’s revision of their odour management plan, and Agrivert have implemented it on site. During site inspections, the Environment Agency checks that the plan is being followed.

On 7 September 2013, the Environment Agency received 14 reports of smells coming from the Agrivert composting site. Investigations found the source of the odour to be chicken litter spread on a local farmer’s field. The smell was not coming from the composting site.
