Abingdon Hydro Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Thames at Abingdon Weir, Abingdon-on-Thames at National Grid Reference (NGR) SU 50555 97189.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 921,024 cubic metres a day
  • 276,307,200 cubic metres a year
  • at an instantaneous rate of 10.66 cubic metres per second

The water will be used for hydropower generation using 2 Archimedean screw turbines.

The second application is for a transfer licence to abstract water from the River Thames, also at Abingdon Weir, Abingdon-on-Thames at NGR SU 50521 97205.

The water will be used for a new combined nature-like and technical fish pass.
