John Edwards

Biography

John Edwards was appointed Interim Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) in July 2021. John has previously held senior posts both within government and in the local government sector.

He began his career as a teacher of mathematics and senior leader in secondary schools, before moving into local government.

His most recent roles include:

  • Director of Funding, Education and Skills Funding Agency
  • Regional Schools Commissioner, East Midlands and the Humber, DfE
  • Director of Education and Skills, Manchester City Council

Interim Chief Executive, Education and Skills Funding Agency

The Chief Executive is a member of the Department for Education Leadership Team, the Audit and Risk Committee and Implementation Committee.

They are responsible for the leadership and day-to-day management of the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), an executive agency of the Department for Education that is accountable for funding education and training for children, young people and adults. The Chief Executive is also Accounting Officer for the ESFA budget and is accountable to the Department for Education’s Principal Accounting Officer, and to Parliament for the stewardship of these funds.
