What we do

We ensure the smooth working of the devolution settlement in Wales, representing the UK government in Wales. We also represent Welsh interests in Westminster.

Responsibilities

We are responsible for:

  • the effective working partnership between government and devolved institutions
  • representing Welsh interests in Westminster and supporting the Secretary of State for Wales in steering Welsh-specific legislation through the UK Parliament
  • representing the UK government in Wales - our Secretary of State may attend and speak at the Welsh National Assembly

Priorities

In 2013, our priorities will be to:

  • act as an advocate for Wales at the heart of the UK government and represent Welsh interests in non-devolved policy areas
  • work with UK government colleagues, the Welsh government and other stakeholders to encourage economic growth and create a more balanced Welsh economy
  • work with government departments and private investors to encourage inward investment, such as in new homes, electrification of railways, broadband internet coverage and a new nuclear power station
  • raise awareness of all that Wales has to offer economically and help to promote Wales as a place to live, visit and work

Who we are

The Wales Office was established in 1999 and is based in both Cardiff and London:

  • in London the Wales Office is in Gwydyr House on Whitehall
  • in Cardiff the Wales Office is at Caspian Point in Cardiff Bay
