What we do
Tax pays for vital public services that include hospitals, schools, police, transport, defence and security. HMRC is responsible for calculating and collecting taxes and duties paid by more than 50 million people and more than 5 million businesses.
We pay and administer Child Benefit, Tax-Free Childcare, statutory pay and tax credits. We protect our citizens, for example, through enforcing the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage and we help keep our borders safe and ensure that trade flows smoothly in and out of the country.

Communication with the public
Customer-facing roles in HMRC require the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English and/or Welsh where required. Where this is an essential requirement this will be tested as part of the selection process.
If you’re successful in your application and are issued a conditional offer you will be required to complete a health questionnaire.
The purpose of this questionnaire is to establish and consider any adjustments you may need within the workplace.
What happens after you’ve completed the health declaration
We may seek advice from our Occupational Health supplier, where appropriate, which will enable HMRC to give consideration to the duties of the role you applied for and what adjustments can be made.
We may also contact you following receipt of the occupational health report to enable us to fully understand and consider your requirements and ensure they will be effective.
Your personal information
We only need to know about the recommended adjustments required. It’s up to you to decide if and at what point you disclose your disability or condition.

Our regional centres
We’re committed to providing our employees with great places to work.
We’re currently going through a 10-year transformation programme to create a tax authority fit for the future. As part of this transformation, we’ve made significant progress with our plans to locate into 13 large, modern, flexible offices, equipped with high-speed digital infrastructure. The collaborative workspaces will have better training and development facilities, with greater opportunities for sharing expertise, local training, promotion and career development.
These offices will be located in central locations in the following cities close to accessible transport links: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Croydon and Stratford (East London).
There will also be a small number of specialist sites, where the work cannot be done anywhere else, in Gartcosh (near Glasgow), Telford, Ipswich, Worthing and Dover, as well as our headquarters in central London. In addition, our Welsh language service has people in specialist roles located in Porthmadog, as well as Cardiff.
If you’re recruited into an office that is not one of these locations you’ll be expected, subject to HMRC’s applicable policies, to move to one of these locations in the future. In some cases, this will be via a transitional site.
If you’re not a current civil servant, you’ll not be eligible for financial assistance for your move to the regional centre or a transitional or specialist site.
If you’re a current HMRC employee and you joined HMRC through an advert that was advertised on or after 11 January 2017, you’ll not be eligible for financial assistance for your move to the regional centre or a transitional or specialist site. This is in line with the terms of your original appointment to HMRC.
