Year of Culture kicks off in Russia’s cultural capital, St Petersburg
An exhibition of photographs by Charles March has opened the UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014 in St Petersburg.
An exhibition of photographs by Charles March called “Nature Translated” has opened at the Marble Palace of the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, - the first exhibition in the official programme of the UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014.
Lord March was joined at the opening by the Director of the State Russian Museum Vladimir Gusev, British Council Russia Director Paul de Quincey, and St Petersburg Consul General, Keith Allan.
It was attended by around 200 people, including representatives of the St Petersburg administration, business community, museums and other cultural institutions. The event gained extensive press coverage, with around 40 journalists present at the opening and the preceding press briefing.
Lord March said: “I’m thrilled to be here in St Petersburg introducing this exhibition of my photographs called “Nature Translated”. This is going to be the first exhibition in the UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014. I’m very honoured that we should be in that position, and I hope that lots of people from St Petersburg will come to enjoy it and this great initiative, this year of cultural exchange, will be an enormous success, I’m sure.”
The exhibition will be open until 17 February 2014.
Earlier this month, the UK-Russia Year of Culture was launched in London with a concert of opera soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre (St Petersburg) and in Moscow with a concert commemorating the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth.
