Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan has congratulated Welsh Assembly Government Ministers on their appointment to the First Minister’s new Cabinet.

Mrs Gillan said she was looking forward to working constructively with the First Minister and his new Cabinet in the best interests of the people of Wales.

Mrs Gillan said:  “I would like to offer my congratulations to all Welsh Assembly Government Ministers on their appointment to the Cabinet.  Although the Assembly Government now has enhanced powers to take decisions in the areas devolved there remains a number of areas where we can work together in the interests of the people of Wales.

“The Welsh economy faces many challenges and a close working relationship between the UK and Welsh Assembly Government is vital. I am keen to work closely with Carwyn Jones and Edwina Hart to ensure that Wales does not miss out on some of the important initiatives we are delivering across the border in England.  Similarly, I will support their decisions on devolved matters where I think they will benefit Wales.

“It will also be important that we continue to work together on other areas of mutual interest such as finance, energy policy, working towards a low carbon economy, cross border health issues and ensuring young people have the necessary skills to enter employment.  I look forward to working constructively, with mutual respect, with Carwyn Jones and his new Cabinet to get the best deal for Wales.”
