Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan has congratulated Carwyn Jones on his return as First Minister.

Mrs Gillan said:  “I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to Carwyn Jones on his return as First Minister. I worked constructively with him prior to the election and I look forward to continuing to do so in the best interests of the people of Wales and the wider United Kingdom.

“Arrangements are being made for us to meet shortly to discuss the priorities we each have for the months and years ahead. It is essential that the UK Government and the new Welsh Assembly Government work together, focusing in particular on strengthening the Welsh economy and making Wales an attractive place in which to invest and create jobs.

“Different governing parties in London and Cardiff should not be an insurmountable barrier to a good working relationship. I believe the interests of Wales are best served by mature, constructive co-operation, free from partisan politics.”
