Wales Office Minister David Jones has welcomed the appointment of Huw Jones as S4C’s chair.    The appointment is for four years commencing on 8 June 2011 and follows a scrutiny hearing held jointly by the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee and the Welsh Affairs Select Committee on 24 May.

Huw Jones is a former Chief Executive of S4C, having held that position from 1994 to 2005. During that time, he chaired its commercial subsidiary and was a Director of SDN, the digital terrestrial television licence holder.  Mr Jones is currently Chair of Portmeirion Ltd, Deputy Chair of the Wales Employment and Skills Board and a Member of the Welsh Language Board.

The Minister said that Mr. Jones’ appointment is an important step towards securing a stable future for the channel.

Mr Jones said: “Undoubtedly, S4C is going through a period of change but Mr. Jones possesses proven qualities of professionalism and leadership to guide the channel through a challenging time and towards a bright and prosperous future.

“S4C plays an important part in the lives of Welsh and non-Welsh speakers alike. It is important that it continues to develop, providing viewers with the high quality Welsh-language programming for which S4C is well-known”.
