As this year’s Wales Rally GB gets underway, Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan is predicting its success, highlighting Wales’ ability to host prestigious international sporting events.

The Rally, which takes place between 11-14 November, is the final round of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship.  Mrs Gillan will present the trophies to the winning drivers in Cardiff Bay on Sunday at 3.25pm.

Thousands of motorsport enthusiasts are expected to descend on Cardiff Bay over the next few days, where a service hub will allow fans to get close to the drivers and the teams.

Mrs Gillan said:  “Wales Rally GB continues to grow each year and is one of the UK’s largest events in the motorsport calendar.  It is yet another example, following the success of the Ashes and The Ryder Cup, of Wales’ ability to host prestigious international sporting events.

“With thousands of fans expected in Cardiff this weekend and millions watching on TV across the World, the Rally will raise Wales’ profile on the world motorsport stage.  It also provides a great boost to the local economy by attracting fans to South Wales.  I look forward to experiencing some of the Rally’s magic when I present the winning drivers with their trophies on Sunday.”
