Vandalism of a Jewish cemetery in Manchester

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles condemns the vandalism of a Jewish cemetery in Manchester.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said:

This is a truly appalling and sickening crime which has shocked the entire community.

To desecrate an individual’s final resting place is an abominable act and my thoughts go out to the family and friends who will be suffering enormous pain and distress at the hands of these thoughtless vandals.

This is very serious, and we should react in the strongest terms to incidents like this. We must ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, and made to feel the full force of the law. Police investigations are ongoing and they have deployed extra patrols to the area over the coming days. Crimes like this are utterly unacceptable in a civilised society like ours, and completely abhorrent to traditional British values.

Whilst thankfully such incidents are rare, any occurrence is one too many and we all need to work together to ensure that crimes like this are banished from our communities once and for all.

I would urge anyone who knows any information about this to come forward and contact the police or the Community Security Trust to help them with their ongoing enquiries to ensure these criminals are caught.
