UPR51: UK Statement on Micronesia

Statement by the UK at Micronesia's Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Thank you Mr. President

The UK welcomes the Federated States of Micronesia’s continued engagement in the UPR process. Despite challenges and capacity constraints, Micronesia has demonstrated its commitment to this vital component of the rules-based international system.

We commend Micronesia’s progress in establishing stronger mechanisms to uphold human rights, including the National Policy to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls, and shelters for victims of human trafficking. Recognising the resource challenges faced, the UK encourages Micronesia to prioritise continued efforts to advance gender equality and humane treatment for all. We also encourage Micronesia to invite international observers to monitor elections.

We recommend that Micronesia:

  1. Takes steps to enhance women’s participation in leadership positions, building on the welcome recent election of a woman as Lieutenant Governor of Pohnpei.

  2. Takes action to tackle barriers facing persons with disabilities accessing healthcare, education and social services.

  3. Ratifies the Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which would further demonstrate its commitment to human rights.

We look forward to our continued engagement with Micronesia and wish them a successful review.

Thank you.
