A Foreign Office Spokesperson said:

“The UK welcomes the announcement of the official first round results by Liberia’s National Election Commission and their notice that a run-off will be conducted by the two presidential candidates with the highest number of votes - Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Winston Tubman.

“We warmly congratulate the National Elections Committee and the Liberian people for the orderly way in which the first round voting was carried out, for the high turnout, and for the access the Liberian authorities granted to observers. We urge the National Elections Commission to be thorough, rigorous and transparent in their examination of any complaints that they receive.

“We call on all parties to respect the will of the people and accept the final results after the second round ballot on 8th November.”
