The UK condemns the killing of Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya Chairman Sheikh Mohammed Idris in the Likoni area of Mombasa. We offer our condolences for the tragic loss of a respected leader and teacher. Our thoughts are with the Muslim and Coastal peoples at this time.

We echo calls for calm and restraint emanating from local community leaders at the Coast, and encourage continued dialogue between all communities.

It is vital that the people responsible for this crime are held to account under law. We hope the authorities to will conduct a full and thorough investigation into this tragic incident. The UK stands ready to support both Kenya’s government and its citizens to counter the shared threat of terrorism in accordance with the Constitution and international human rights law.
