Traffic Bulletin: New date for closures on A14 major resurfacing

Road users are advised the overnight carriageway closures on the A14 in Cambridgeshire due to start tonight will now begin on Tuesday (28 October) as the £3 million project to resurface sections begins.

The work had been due to start tonight, but has been postponed for operational reasons.

The work will take place over the next two months and will be carried out in three phases, improving 12.6 miles of this Cambridgeshire road.

The new surface will provide drivers with smoother, safer and quieter journeys. The work is part of record government investment in roads – the biggest since the 1970s. It will involve overnight closures, one carriageway at a time, and is due to be completed, weather permitting, by 2 December.

The work on the A14 between A1307 and junctions 26 (St Ives) and 31 (Girton) includes carriageway resurfacing and patching, the renewal of road markings and road studs.

Highways Agency project manager, Dave Elwyn said:

This is a £3 million scheme which is taking place to prolong the life of the carriageway. The work has been designed to improve the surface of the road and improve safety for road users, while minimising the need for future maintenance works in these locations. We ask that drivers take care travelling through the roadworks and along the diversion routes, follow the traffic signs and any instructions of site staff.

We have planned the work to be carried out in phases and overnight, when traffic flows are at their lowest, to minimise disruption. The majority of work will be carried out overnight, between 10pm and 6am.

Work will start on Tuesday 28 October and will be completed by 2 December, and will be carried out in three phases:

  • Phase 1 will take place on the A14 – A1307 westbound carriageway, Huntingdon Road. There will be overnight closures from Tuesday 28 October to Wednesday 12 November. These works will take place between 8pm and 6am.

  • Phase 2 will take place on the A14 westbound carriageway between junction 31 (Girton) and 29 (Bar Hill). There will be overnight closures of the westbound carriageway from Tuesday 28 October to Monday 10 November.

  • Phase 3 will take place on the A14 westbound carriageway between junction 26 (St Ives) and junction 29 (Bar Hill). There will be overnight closures of the westbound carriageway from Monday 10 November to Tuesday 2 December.

During the overnight closures clearly signed diversion routes will be in place:

  • Phase 1 – Traffic will use the A1307, B1049 to junction 32 and then the A14 to junction 31.

  • Phase 2 – Traffic will use the A428 and A1.

  • Phase 3 - Traffic will use the A428 and A1.

Access for residents will be retained at all times, with local residents who require access escorted past the roadworks by members of the site team.

The work is dependent on suitable weather conditions, and dates may be subject to change. Work on the eastbound carriageway will begin soon after this work is complete. More details will be announced soon.
