The Secretary of State has appointed Barbara Woroncow as a Trustee of the Royal Armouries
Barbara Woroncow has been appointed by the Secretary of State as Trustee of the Royal Armouries for a four year term from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2025.
Barbara’s professional career was spent in the museum sector following a degree in Archaeology & Anthropology at Cambridge University. Starting as a curator of ethnographic collections in local authority museums, she moved into advisory work and was Chief Executive for 16 years of the Yorkshire Museums Council, a strategic regional development body funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.
Barbara is a past elected President of the UK Museums Association and was awarded an OBE in 2000 for services to museums. She has served on the boards of the International Council of Museums for the UK and for Europe. After taking early retirement, she spent five years undertaking international consultancy and development work for organisations including UNESCO in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Southern Caucasus. Barbara has also had experience as an independent assessor for public appointments, a board member of regional tourism bodies and an advisor in health sector research into patient use of new technologies in oncology.
She is currently a trustee of the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby, a trustee of the Leeds Culture Trust and a patient representative on the boards of several large-scale research projects at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.
This role is not remunerated. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Cabinet Office’s Governance Code on Public Appointments. The appointments process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Under the Code, any significant political activity undertaken by an appointee in the last five years must be declared. This is defined as including holding office, public speaking, making a recordable donation, or candidature for election. Barbara Woroncow has not declared any activity.
