On 26 November 2014 the Surveillance Camera Commissioner and Taylor Wessing jointly hosted a webinar aimed at supporting universities and colleges to adopt the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice.

This webinar is the first in a series of webinars and gives an overview of the role of the commissioner and the code. It helps organisations such as Universities and Colleges understand how they can ensure their systems meet the 12 guiding principles in the code as well how to promote this to the people their cameras protect.
Protecting students
Safety and security is increasingly becoming a factor in the decisions students make when choosing where to study. Surveillance camera systems play a key role in protecting student communities and the campuses where they live and work. However, there is a fine balance between protection and invading an individual’s privacy.
Tony Porter, the Surveillance Camera Commissioner, is responsible for ensuring cameras are used to protect communities rather than spy on them. The Surveillance Camera Code of Practice will ensure that cameras are use proportionately, effectively and transparently. By adopting the code of practice organisations will be able to demonstrate that student safety is of paramount importance whilst at the same time respecting their right to privacy.
