The main purpose of Professor Hendry’s visit was to promote the benefits of UK investment into Kazakhstan and Kazakh investment into the UK, assisting in the development of greater trade and investment between the two countries. The British Government sees Kazakhstan as one of about two dozen global Emerging Powers and the visit helped further develop the bilateral relationship.
In Astana, Professor Hendry had a series of high-level meetings focussing on building bilateral trade relations, including the Head of Presidential Administration Karim Massimov; Chairman of Samruk-Kazyna Umirzak Shukeyev; Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov; Deputy Prime Minister Kairat Kelimbetov; Minister for Oil and Gas Sauat Mynbaev; Vice-Minister of Innovation and New Technology Nurlan Sauranbayev; Chairman of Agency for Civil Service Ualikhan Baimenov. Developments in technology, agriculture, green energy, English language education and financial services were among the topics discussed.
Professor Hendry also attended MINEX, the 4th Mining and Mineral Exploration Forum and gave a welcoming address. At MINEX he met with both UK mining companies and UK investors.
On his visit, Professor Hendry commented:
Through dialogue we can build prosperity for both our countries and hopefully take our contact forward to an even deeper and broader level of engagement.
