Investigation into a serious injury to a child at Crossacres tram stop, Manchester, 7 October 2025.

At around 15:37 on 7 October 2025, an 11-year-old child became trapped between the platform and a departing tram at Crossacres tram stop, on the Manchester Metrolink. The child was then dragged along the platform for around 15 to 20 metres, suffering life-changing injuries as a result.
Our investigation will seek to identify the sequence of events which led to the accident. It will also consider:
- the actions of those involved and anything which may have influenced them
- the arrangements in place to manage and control the risks associated with dispatching trams from tram stops
- the arrangements in place to manage and control the risks associated with running two trams coupled together
- the management of the staff involved, including their training and competence
- any relevant underlying factors.
Our investigation is independent of any investigation by the tramway industry or by the industry’s regulator, the Office of Rail and Road.
We will publish our findings, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of our investigation. This report will be available on our website.
