The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been felt across our communities, with low income families and vulnerable people struggling with food shortages.

Volunteers from the Mirehouse Residents Association are co-ordinating efforts to help those who need it in the 4,000 strong community near Whitehaven. And we’re helping with a £10,000 donation.

Our head of community and development, Gary McKeating, said:

We’re doing everything that we can to support our local community, working closely with Copeland Borough Council and our owners, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

We want all of our donations to be targeted at those who need it and underpinned by facts from the volunteers co-ordinating efforts on the ground.

This donation will help to ensure that the families on Mirehouse estate who are in need are supported throughout this crisis and the Mirehouse Residents Association are best placed to make sure that happens.

Hopefully our donation will help them to expand their reach over the next few months.

The funding will be used by the Mirehouse Residents Association and its army of 50 volunteers to support the elderly, disabled and low income families on the estate.

They will provide food parcels and cooked meals along with activity packs for 1,200 children under the age of 16.

Charlie McGregor, trustee and treasurer of Mirehouse Residents Association, said:

We would like to thank Sellafield Ltd for this very generous and kind donation of £10,000.

Mirehouse Community Centre Association and Mirehouse Residents Group are working together to support 4,000 people in our community throughout the outbreak of Covid-19 and this amount of money is going to help and support so many families on our estate.

Our volunteers on Mirehouse are working 24/7 to make sure everyone gets the support that they need. We will be using the money to feed families that are on low income, those that are vulnerable, the elderly and those with health conditions to make sure they are at least getting fed a nutritious meal.
