Secretary Of State for Northern Ireland announces reappointments to Intertrade UK
Intertrade UK is a non-statutory advisory body established by the UK government to advise on and promote trade within the United Kingdom
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, The Rt Hon Sir Chris Bryant MP, has today announced the reappointment of The Rt Hon. the Baroness Foster of Aghadrumsee DBE as Chair of Intertrade UK. Baroness Foster’s reappointment will see her continue to lead the non-statutory advisory body, which was established to promote trade and investment within the UK internal market.
In addition to the reappointment of the Chair, the Secretary of State has also confirmed the reappointment of four further board members to Intertrade UK:
- Dr Esmond Birnie - Senior Economist, Ulster University
- Kirsty McManus - Northern Ireland Director, Institute of Directors
- Suzanne Wylie - Chief Executive Officer, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce
- Roger Pollen - Head of the Federation of Small Businesses in Northern Ireland
Background
Intertrade UK is a non-statutory advisory body established by the UK government to advise on and promote trade within the United Kingdom. The commitment to establish Intertrade UK was made in the Safeguarding the Union Command Paper published in January 2024.
As set out in the Safeguarding the Union Command Paper and Intertrade UK’s Terms of Reference, the role of Intertrade UK includes:
- to provide advice and facilitation to enable businesses and traders across the UK to expand activities and trade across the UK;
- to promote the full extent of the UK’s market to businesses and traders; and
- to conduct and publish research or other activity designed to advance intra-UK trade by helping to remove real barriers to trade and counter any misconceptions or confusion businesses and traders in Great Britain may have about providing goods and services in Northern Ireland.
