Role of the group

Intertrade UK is a non-statutory advisory body established by the UK government to advise on and promote trade within the United Kingdom.

The commitment to establish Intertrade UK was made in the Safeguarding the Union Command Paper published in January 2024.

As set out in the Safeguarding the Union Command Paper and Intertrade UK’s Terms of Reference, the role of Intertrade UK includes:

  • to provide advice and facilitation to enable businesses and traders across the UK to expand activities and trade across the UK;
  • to promote the full extent of the UK’s market to businesses and traders; and
  • to conduct and publish research or other activity designed to advance intra-UK trade by helping to remove real barriers to trade and counter any misconceptions or confusion businesses and traders in Great Britain may have about providing goods and services in Northern Ireland.

In September 2024, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland confirmed the appointment of the Rt Hon. the Baroness (Arlene) Foster of Aghadrumsee DBE as the Chair of Intertrade UK, and appointed five further members with expertise in trade and business in February 2025.
