Policing minister visits Bournemouth

Newly-appointed minister Nick Herbert learns about the challenges of policing the Dorset night-time economy.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Nick Herbert spent time with Dorset police yesterday on his first visit as Home Office minister with responsibility for police.

He accompanied officers on foot patrol in Bournemouth before being given a tour of the area’s innovative ‘safe bus’.

‘I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen here,’ he said. ’We’re talking to officers with understanding of the problems, about what they’re doing locally to police the nighttime economy here. It’s been great to see it and it’s a good example of policing at its best.’

Operating since summer 2009, the bus houses a group of volunteers who give assistance to anyone intoxicated, injured or lost in the town.

Mr Herbert also met with partners, including licensing officers and a night time economy co-ordinator.
