PM and Jean-Claude Juncker meeting: July 2014

The Prime Minister met Jean-Claude Juncker, the next European Commission President, this morning (17 July).

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Following the meeting, a Downing Street spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister met with the next Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, this morning in Brussels.

They discussed the challenges facing the EU in the next 5 years. The Prime Minister set out his vision for reform of the European Union and the UK’s relationship with it. Mr Juncker reiterated his commitment, set out in his manifesto, to work with Britain and the other EU member states to address the concerns of the UK over the next few years.

They also discussed the formation of the next Commission. The Prime Minister underlined his preference for securing an economic portfolio that would enable the British Commissioner to play a pivotal role tackling Europe’s lack of competitiveness.

The Prime Minister then introduced Lord Hill to Mr Juncker and they continued their discussions on the next Commission.
