Please note: we will be completing or lifting most roadworks by or for the late summer bank holiday to give holidaymakers smoother journeys between 5am on Thursday 27 August and 5am on Tuesday 1 September

M56 Junction 11 Daresbury

A major project is taking place to tackle congestion at junction 11 of the M56 near Daresbury. Clearly signed diversions will be in place when roads are closed.

M6 summer clean-up - junctions 31 to 33 and junctions 35 to 41

Round-the-clock work has begun under single lane and or hard shoulder closures to carry out routine maintenance along the M6 including verges and central reservation with works including barrier repairs and re-tensioning, weed spraying, grass cutting, gully cleaning and electrical works. The work will be carried out in 2.5 mile stretches of the motorway (often in both directions).

M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme will require some overnight closures affecting the full carriageway and slip roads, with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017. For safety and practical reasons the traffic management for these road works will remain in place over the bank holiday weekend.

A55/A483 Roundabout, Chester

Work has now been largely completed at this scheme with the junction fully-open to drivers. Some snagging work and installation of street lights remains, which will be carried out using overnight lane closures only. For more information visit the project web page

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon

A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in winter 2016/17. More information is available on the project web page.

A590 Lindal-in-Furness

A 6 week project started on Monday 27 July to repair the footpath, introduce a Toucan crossing and tackle carriageway flooding along the A590 around The Green. Off-peak lane closures will be needed, controlled by temporary traffic signals, between 9.30am and 3.30pm. The work is due to be completed by Friday 4 September.

A595 Mirehouse to Bigrigg

Work started on Monday (3 August) to install speed signs for a reduction in the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph along the A595 being Mirehouse Road and Bigrigg. Road safety boost for A595 south of Whitehaven in Cumbria. The work should be completed before the start of the late summer bank holiday weekend. The work, at different sites along the route, will be taking place between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day with occasional use of temporary traffic signals.

A595 Calder Bridge

Resurfacing of the carriageway and footpath as well as drainage repairs is taking place between Calder Bridge and the junction with the B5345. Temporary traffic lights are in use. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of August. For more information please see the press release

A5036 Litherland

A £1.7 million project to resurface the main road to the Port of Liverpool is due to start on Monday 24 August. A two and a half mile stretch of the A5036 is being resurfaced from the junction with the M57 and the M58, known as Switch Island, to the junction with Hawthorne Road. All of the work will be carried out overnight to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum, and clearly-signed diversions will be in place when short stretches of the road are closed.

A66 Penrith

A project to improve drainage on a stretch of the A66 near Penrith began on Wednesday 15 July, improving safety for drivers. The month-long Highways England scheme will tackle flooding issues on the section of the road near Whinfell Park, approximately 3 miles east of the town. The majority of the work will be carried out overnight, with temporary traffic lights in use, although a temporary 40mph speed limit will be place at all times of day for the safety of drivers.
