The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 7 August and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M53 junction 2 Moreton

A project is taking place to upgrade the bridges on the section of the M53 at junction 2, removing weight restrictions and reinstating lanes. The southbound exit and entry slip roads are currently closed to all traffic. A 50mph speed limit and narrow lanes are in place. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of August.

M56 junction 8 Bowdon

This junction will be closed overnight on Monday (10 August) from 9pm to 5am (see A556 entry).

M56 junction 11 Daresbury

A major project is taking place to tackle congestion at junction 11 of the M56 near Daresbury. Clearly signed diversions will be in place when roads are closed.

M6 junction 16 Crewe and junction 18 Holmes Chapel

Work is taking place to repair two bridges, which carry Congleton Road and Betchton Road over the M6. Lane closures and a 50mph limit will be in place along sections of the M6 while the work is taking place.

M6 summer clean-up - junctions 31 to 33 and junctions 35 to 41

Round-the-clock work has begun under single lane and or hard shoulder closures to carry out routine maintenance along the M6 including verges and central reservation with works including barrier repairs and re-tensioning, weed spraying, grass cutting, gully cleaning and electrical works. The work will be carried out in 2.5 mile stretches of the motorway (often in both directions).

M60 junction 8 Sale to M62 junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme will require some overnight closures affecting the full carriageway and slip roads, with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017.

For more information visit the scheme page.

M62 junctions 10 to 11

Overnight work has begun to resurface the westbound M62 between Croft Interchange (junction 10) and Birchwood (junction 11) using lane closures between 10pm and 5am each night. Nightly full closures for up to 10 week nights will be taking place from Monday (10 August) with a diversion from Birchwood down to junction 21A of the M6.

A55/A483 roundabout, Chester

Work has now been largely completed at this scheme with the junction fully-open to drivers. Some snagging work and installation of street lights remains, which will be carried out using overnight lane closures only.

A56 (and M66) north of Bury

Highways England is carrying out repairs to the bridge which carries the A56 over the East Lancs Railway over two weekends. The second weekend’s work will begin tonight (7 August) with parts of the southbound A56 and M66 closing between 10pm tonight and 6am on Monday morning (10 August).

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon

A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in winter 2016/17. Next week: the southbound A556 between Bowdon Roundabout and Bucklow Hill will be closed between 9pm and 5am on Monday (10 August) for overnight works. The closure will also mean slip road onto the westbound M56 from the southbound A556 – i.e. M56 junction 8 - will be closed. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place and more information is available on the project web page.

A590 Lindal-in-Furness

A 6 week project started on Monday 27 July to repair the footpath, introduce a Toucan crossing and tackle carriageway flooding along the A590 around The Green. Off-peak lane closures will be needed, controlled by temporary traffic signals, between 9.30am and 3.30pm. The work is due to be completed by Friday 4 September.

A595 Mirehouse to Bigrigg

Work started on Monday (3 August) to install speed signs for a reduction in the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph along the A595 being Mirehouse Road and Bigrigg. Road safety boost for A595 south of Whitehaven in Cumbria. The work should be completed before the start of the late summer bank holiday weekend.
