Planned roadworks in the North East: summary for Monday 7 to 13 December

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 4 December but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

A1 junction 56 Barton to junction 51 Leeming Bar

There will be phases of overnight lane closures and full carriageway closures while work takes place to upgrade the road to motorway standards. There will also be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction 24 hours a day. There will be a southbound carriageway closure between Scotch Corner and junction 51, and the northbound will be closed between junction 50 and Scotch Corner. This closure will take place between 8pm and 6am Monday 7 to Thursday 10 December, and on Sunday 13 December. The same closure will then take place between 8pm on Friday 11th and 8am on Saturday 12th, and between 8pm on Saturday 12th and 10am on Sunday 13th. The project is due to be completed by spring 2017.

A1 Lamesley to Swalwell, Gateshead

Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place while work is carried out to upgrade the section of the A1 past Gateshead. In addition to this there will be a carriageway closure north and southbound at junction 68 with all traffic being diverted up and over the interchange. This will take place Monday 7 to Friday 11 December between 8pm and 6am. There are also overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am. The project is due to be completed by spring 2016.

A1 Morpeth, Northumberland

There will be work ongoing until the end of 2016 for the construction of a bypass. There will be various phases of daytime and night time lane and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a 40mph speed restriction in place.

A1 South Charlton to Ellingham, Northumberland

There will be various phases of traffic signals north and southbound between 8pm and 6am for horticultural work, taking place Monday 7 to Friday 11 December.

A1 Charlton Mires, Northumberland

There will be traffic signals in operation north and southbound between 6am and 6pm for signing work. This will take place Monday 7 December.

A1 Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland

There will be convoy working in operation north and southbound between 8pm and 6am for resurfacing work, taking place Monday 7 to Friday 11 December.

A66 Little Burdon, Darlington, County Durham

There will be work ongoing until January 2016 for resurfacing and electrical work. Overnight the westbound carriageway will be closed with all traffic travelling in contraflow on the eastbound carriageway, taking place between 8pm and 6am. There will also be a daytime lane closure on the approaches to and around the roundabout at Little Burdon between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

A66 Bowes to Cross Lanes, County Durham

There will be a 24 hour contraflow in operation for resurfacing work. The westbound carriageway will be closed with all traffic travelling on the eastbound carriageway. This will take place until 22 December.

A1M junction 61 to 63, County Durham

There will be a carriageway closure northbound for resurfacing work. This will take place until 5 December between 8pm and 6am, with a diversion in place.
