Planned roadworks in the North East – summary for Monday 4 to Sunday 10 May

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 1 May and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

A1M Junction 62 Durham to Junction 63 Chester-le-Street

Lane 2 is currently closed with traffic using the hard shoulder and lane 1 instead while work takes place to upgrade the barrier in the central reservation. The northbound side of the road will also be closed overnight between 8pm on Saturday 9 May and 6am on Sunday 10 May, with a diversion in place. The scheme is due to be finished in June.

A1M Junction 56 Barton to Junction 57 Darlington, County Durham

There will be a lane closure in both directions for electrical work from 8pm until midnight on Tuesday 5 May.

A1M Junction 50 Baldersby to Junction 51 Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire

There will be a lane closure on the southbound side of the road for electrical work from 6am until 9.30am on Saturday 9 May.

A1M Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire

There will be a lane closure on the roundabout between 9am and 4pm for construction work until the end of October.

A1 Junction 56 Barton to Junction 51 Leeming Bar

There will be overnight lane and carriageway closures while works take place to upgrade the road to motorway standards. There will also be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction 24 hours a day until March 2017. The northbound carriageway between Junction 50 and Scotch Corner, and the southbound carriageway between Scotch Corner and Junction 51, will be closed from 8pm on Saturday 9 May until 6am on Sunday 10 May. Drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes.

A1 Lamesley to Swalwell

Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place while work is carried out to upgrade the section of the A1 past Gateshead. There will also be some overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am until the project is completed in spring 2016. The road will be closed at Lobley Hill between 8pm and 6am from Monday 4 until Friday 8 May. Diversions will be in place.

A1 Alnwick, Northumberland

The southbound side of the A1 is currently closed near Alnwick while work takes place to refurbish a bridge. Traffic is running in both directions on the northbound carriageway 24 hours a day. Temporary traffic lights are also in use on the A1068 below the bridge. The project is due to be completed by August.

A1 Denton Burn Interchange, Newcastle upon Tyne

There will be a lane closure on the northbound exit slip road for maintenance work from 7pm on Saturday 9 May until 7am on Sunday 10 May.

A1 Warreners House to Shotton, Northumberland

There will be a lane closure in both directions while work takes place to paint road markings between 8pm and 6am from Tuesday 5 until Friday 8 May.

A1 Tritlington, Northumberland

Temporary traffic lights will operate between 8pm and 6am for construction work from Tuesday 5 until Thursday 28 May.

A19 Killingworth to Holystone, North Tyneside

The southbound side of the road will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am for resurfacing work until Tuesday 19 May. A diversion will be in place.

A696 Prestwick to Kenton Bar, Newcastle upon Tyne

The westbound side of the road will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am for resurfacing work until Friday 8 May. A diversion will be in place.
