Planned roadworks in the North East: summary for Monday 21 September to Sunday 27 September

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 18 September but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

A1 junction 56 Barton to junction 51 Leeming Bar

There will be phases of overnight lane closures and full carriageway closures while work takes place to upgrade the road to motorway standards. There will also be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction 24 hours a day, and a lane closure on the junction 51 roundabout between 9am and 4pm until the end of October. In addition to this the southbound and northbound carriageway will be closed overnight, from 8pm until 6am, between junction 56 (Barton) and Scotch Corner, and northbound between Catterick North and Catterick South interchanges. This will take place from Monday 21 September until Friday 25 September. There will be a southbound carriageway closure overnight, from 8pm until 6am, between Scotch Corner and junction 51 (Leeming Bar), on Saturday 26 September and the northbound will be closed overnight, from 8pm until 6am, between junction 50 and Scotch Corner. The project is due to be completed by spring 2017.

A1 Lamesley to Swalwell, Gateshead

Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place while work is carried out to upgrade the section of the A1 past Gateshead. There are also overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am. There will be a carriageway closure southbound between junction 74 and junction 66, with a carriageway closure northbound at Lobley Hill. These closures will take place from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 September between 8pm and 6am, with diversions in place. The project is due to be completed by spring 2016.

A1/A194M junction 65 to Whitemarepool, Gateshead

There will be various phases of lane closures, carriageway closures and contraflow, north and southbound for resurfacing work. From Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September there will be a carriageway closure northbound between junction 65 and Havannah Interchange, and a southbound lane closure between Whitemare Pool roundabout and junction 65. All these closures will take place between 8pm and 6am, with a diversion in place where the road is closed. There will then be a 24 hour contraflow with the northbound carriageway closed and all traffic travelling on the southbound carriageway, taking place from 8pm on Friday 25 to 6am on Monday 28 September. This project is due for completion by mid November.

A1 Oxford to Scremerston, Northumberland

There will be a carriageway closure north and southbound for resurfacing work, from Friday 18 to Friday 25 September, between 8pm and 6am, with a diversion in place. The project is due to be completed early November.

A1 Seaton Burn to Shotton, Northumberland

There will be a carriageway closure northbound between 8pm and 6am, and a daytime lane closure northbound between 6am and 8pm, for improvement work. This will take place from Sunday 27 September to mid November.

A1 Stannington, Northumberland

There will be a closure of the northbound entry slip for resurfacing work. This will take place from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September, between 8pm and 6am, with a diversion in place.

A1 Mitford, Northumberland

There will be a daytime lane closure north and southbound for inspection work. This will take place Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 September, between 8am and 4pm.

A1M junction 59 Coatham Mundeville to junction 60 Bradbury, County Durham

There will be carriageway closures southbound between 8pm and 6am with daytime hard shoulder closures between 6am and 8pm from Thursday 17 September for resurfacing works. This project is due for completion at the beginning of October.

A1M junction 61 to 63, County Durham

There will be carriageway closures southbound between 8pm and 6am on Sunday 20 September, and a northbound closure on Monday 21 September, with diversions in place. Following on from this every night between 8pm and 6am the southbound carriageway will be closed with all traffic travelling on the northbound carriageway. Daytime cylinders will be in place 24/7 with a 50mph speed restriction. This project is due for completion at the end of November.

There will be phases of full closures north and southbound with the southbound exit slip road and northbound entry slip road closed overnight at the A19 junction with the A1058, near the Silverlink retail park, for bridge repair work. A full carriageway closure north and southbound will take place Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September between 8pm and 6am. The project is due to be completed by 20 October.

A66 Surtees Bridge to Teesside Park, Teesside

There will be a carriageway closure eastbound between 8pm and 6am for resurfacing work. This project is due for completion 2 October.

A66 Smallways to Greta Bridge, County Durham

There will be 24 hour contraflow in place for resurfacing work. The westbound carriageway will be closed with both directions travelling on the eastbound carriageway. This will take place until Friday 23 October.

A66 West of Bowes, Spital Grange, County Durham

There will be a daytime and overnight lane closure east and westbound for drainage work. This will take place overnight from Sunday 20 to Tuesday 22 September, and between 7.30am and 5pm on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September.
