Planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week.
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 14 August but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
A1M junction 64, County Durham
There will be some overnight lane and slip road closures, between 8pm and 6am, while bridge repair work takes place, until Thursday 20 August.
A1M junction 59, County Durham
Overnight lane and slip road closures will be in place between Monday 17 and Friday 21 August for resurfacing work, between 8pm and 6am. Drivers will be able to follow clearly signed diversion routes.
A1 Swalwell, Newcastle western bypass
The northbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for maintenance work on Thursday 20 August.
A1 junction 56 Barton to junction 51 Leeming Bar
There will be phases of overnight lane closures and full carriageway closures while work takes place to upgrade the road to motorwaystandards. There will also be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction 24 hours a day, and a lane closure on the junction 51 roundabout between 9am and 4pm until the end of October. The northbound carriageway will be closed overnight, from 8pm until 6am, between junction 50 and Scotch Corner, and southbound between Scotch Corner and junction 51, from Monday 17 until Friday 21 August. Both sides of the road will also be closed overnight between Scotch Corner and junction 56 from 8pm on Saturday 22 August until 10am on Sunday 23 August, and between 8pm on Sunday 23 August until 6am on Monday 24 August. The project is due to be completed by spring 2017.
A1 Lamesley to Swalwell, Gateshead
Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place while work is carried out to upgrade the section of the A1 past Gateshead. There are also overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am. The A1 will also be closed at Lobley Hill overnight, between 8pm and 6am, taking drivers off and then back on at the junction from Monday 17 until Friday 21 August. The project is due to be completed by spring 2016.
A1 Alnwick, Northumberland
The northbound side of the A1 is currently closed near Alnwick while work takes place to refurbish a bridge. Traffic is running in both directions on the southbound carriageway 24 hours a day. Temporary traffic lights are also in use on the A1068 below the bridge. The project is due to be completed by the end of August.
A1 Stannington, Northumberland
Traffic will run in both directions, in a contraflow system, on the southbound carriageway while work takes place to resurface the northbound carriageway. The scheme is due to be completed in September.
A1 Charlton Mires, Northumberland
Temporary traffic lights will be in use overnight, between 8pm and 6am while new signs are installed from Monday 17 until Thursday 20 August.
A19 Holystone interchange, North Tyneside
The A19 will be closed in both directions at Holystone Interchange from 8pm on Friday 21 August until 6am on Monday 24 August for bridge repair work. A diversion will take drivers off and then back on at the junction. There will also be additional slip road, lane and carriageway closures later in the summer, with the project due to be completed in September.
A66 Bowes to Cumbrian Border, County Durham
There will be 24 hour contraflow in place for resurfacing work. The westbound carriageway will be closed with both directions travelling on the eastbound carriageway. This will take place until the end of August.
A66 Scotch Corner to Ravensworth, North Yorkshire
Drivers will be led through roadworks in convoys overnight, between 8pm and 6am, while work takes place to paint new road markings from Monday 17 until Friday 21 August.
A66 Yarm Road interchange, Teesside
The eastbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am, to cut back overgrown grass and vegetation on Monday 17 August. The westbound exit slip road will also be closed overnight on Tuesday 18 August. Diversions will be in place.
A66 Blackwell, Darlington bypass, County Durham
Temporary traffic lights will be in use overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for bridge repair work on Saturday 22 August.
