ONGOING WORK

M1 J8-9, Hertfordshire: overhead message signs upgrade

Work to carry out some upgrades on the overhead message signs on the M1 in both directions between junctions 8 and 9, near Hemel Hempstead, is continuing. The work is carried out weeknights only from 10pm to 5am. During the work, there will be the following overnight lane closures:

  • 28-29 Sept: northbound lanes 2, 3 and 4
  • 29 Sept: northbound junction 9 exit sliproad

When the sliproads are closed, traffic wishing to join the M1 will be diverted to join at the next junction.

M1 northbound, J14, Milton Keynes to J15 for Northampton: surveys

Work to carry out drainage and pavement surveys on the northbound M1 between junctions 14 and 15 continues. The work will be carried out between 9pm and 6am on weeknights and is planned to be completed by early October. During the work there will be a hard shoulder and lane 1 closure.

A1(M) J6, Welwyn, Hertfordshire: bridge joint renewal

Work to renew a series of bridge joints on the northbound A1(M) at junction 6 will take place overnight from Monday 21 September for eight nights. During the works, the A1(M) will be closed from 10pm until 5am and traffic will be diverted off the A1(M) at junction 6, onto the A1000 to Clock roundabout and re-join the A1(M) northbound at junction 6. The 24-hour hard shoulder closures and overnight lane closures past the works in place for the ongoing junction improvements at this location remain in place during these works.

We are building a new 2.9-mile, two-lane dual carriageway running from north of Dunstable and joining the M1 at a new junction 11a, south of Chalton. Main construction started in March 2015.

Work on the M1:

We have started work on the new M1 junction. Three lanes will remain open on each carriageway during the work. The traffic management, including safety barriers, signs, CCTV and average speed cameras, will stay in place throughout the junction construction work, which will be carried out in phases and should be finished in spring 2017 as the scheme nears completion. There will also be overnight lane closures when required, which will be clearly signposted.

From Monday 21 to Friday 25 September we will need to close two out of three lanes on the M1 in both directions, weeknights only, from 10pm to 6am, so we can amend the traffic management for a new phase of work.

Work on the A5:

On the A5, travelling from the A505, roundabout traffic has been realigned and now runs on the east side of the carriageway on one lane in each direction to allow for embankment work. In addition, there are three-way traffic lights at the A5/A505 roundabout, north of Dunstable, weeknights only between 8pm and 6am, to allow construction of the western verge for a cycleway and footway.

Work on local roads:

On Sundon Road and Luton Road (B579) there will be two-way traffic lights weekdays only between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

And the B579 Luton Road bridge (over the M1) will be permanently closed from Friday 25 September 2015, 8pm. A clearly sign-posted diversion will be in place during the weekend while we tie a new road layout in to Luton Road, north of the old bridge. The new road layout will be in place from Monday 28 September 2015, 6am, for traffic wishing to travel over the M1at this location.

Work on the major improvement is due to complete in spring 2017. For more information, visit the scheme page

  • keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
  • get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
  • concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
  • be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
