A47 junction 16-15 westbound, Peterborough: surface repairs

Work to repair carriageway surfacing on the westbound A47 between junctions 16 and 15 near Peterborough will take place overnight on 17 September between 8pm and 6am. During the work, the westbound A47 will be closed and traffic will be diverted via the A15, A1139 and A1260.

Ongoing work

M1 northbound, junction 14, Milton Keynes to junction 15 for Northampton: surveys

Work to carry out drainage and pavement surveys on the northbound M1 between junctions 14 and 15 continues. The work will be carried out between 9pm and 6am on weeknights and is planned to be completed by early October. During the work there will be a hard shoulder and lane 1 closure.

A1(M) J6, Welwyn: junction improvements

Work to improve the junction at A1(M) junction 6 is continuing. Work will take place on weeknights between 10pm and 5am. At all other times there will be 24 hour hard shoulder closures and overnight lane closures past the works.

We are building a new 2.9 mile, 2 lane dual carriageway running from north of Dunstable and joining the M1 at a new junction 11a, south of Chalton. Main construction started in March 2015.

We have started work on the new junction on the M1. 3 lanes will remain open on each carriageway during the work, with traffic running on the hard shoulder and lanes 1 and 2. The traffic management, including safety barriers, signs, CCTV and average speed cameras, will stay in place throughout the junction construction work, which will be carried out in phases and should be finished in spring 2017 as the scheme nears completion. There will also be overnight lane closures when required, which will be clearly signposted.

On the A5, travelling from the A505, roundabout traffic has been realigned and now runs on the east side of the carriageway on one lane in each direction to allow for embankment work.

From 17 August, we will have 3 way traffic lights at the A5/A505 roundabout, north of Dunstable, to allow construction of the western verge for a cycleway and footway. And on Sundon Road and Luton Road (B579) there will be 2 way traffic signals Monday to Friday between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm.

Work on the major improvement is due to complete in spring 2017. For more information, visit the scheme page

We are carrying out some finishing off works, which include landscaping, street lighting and fully resurfacing the road between junctions 31 and 32.

Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

  • keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety
  • get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching
  • concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks
  • be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks
  • keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front
  • observe all signs – they are there to help you
